Bottovo – Hotels, Route 3, Reservoirs and History

Bottovo lies along Route 3, which leads to mineral springs and bodies of water in the region. The route begins at the Kurinec recreational center near Rimavská Sobota and runs via Hodejov, Bottovo and the Číž spa to the Teplý vrch recreational center. Further along, Route 3 leads from Hodejov in the direction of Bottovo. The Bottovo Reservoir is a named stop on Route 3; shortly afterward, the route reaches the Martinová Reservoir.

A cycling trip from Rimavská Sobota via Pavlovce, the Bottovo Reservoir and the Martinová Reservoir is described as a 34-kilometer round trip. Thus, both reservoirs and the section via Pavlovce belong to this clearly defined route. The route also names the Číž spa and the Kurinec and Teplý vrch recreational centers as points along its course.

Nature and Bodies of Water

The brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus) has been recorded at the Bottovo Reservoir. In the vicinity of Bottovo, Route 3 passes the Martinová Reservoir, which is designated as a protected natural area. The area around Bottovo also includes well-known spas in Číž for treating disorders of the musculoskeletal and circulatory systems.

History and Culture

Bottovo was founded in 1926 in the cadastral areas of Dubovec, Cakov and Rimavská Seč. The settlement was founded by Slovaks from Orava and Pohronie and by Czech colonists from the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. After the annexation to Hungary in 1938, the Slovak settlers had to leave Bottovo.

Bottovo has a monument to Ivan Krasko. There is also a local monument in the park in front of Bottovo’s cultural center.

Local Traces

An ash tree grows on the grounds of the local primary school in Bottovo. It is the last surviving tree from an original group of 50 trees planted by local schoolchildren. The ash tree was entered in the Tree of the Year competition.

At an event in Bottovo, the program included a small craft market and creative workshops. At the creative workshops, people made harvest wreaths, straw figures, gingerbread and bobbin lace.
