Poproč: Mountains, History and Hotels in Slovakia

Poproč is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains on ridges between the tributaries of the Blh; its history is documented for the year 1413 under the names Felseő Poprocz and Also Poprocz.

Landscape

The terrain is hilly and lies at an elevation of about 525 to 570 m. The Šagulova mountain is located in the vicinity of Poproč. The Železník mountain is also in the surrounding area. The Trstie mountain is likewise near Poproč, as is the Sinec mountain.

Culture and History

The village was founded by an hereditary judge named Šebastián. Poproč has a Protestant church; there is also a bell tower. Historical livelihoods in Poproč included livestock farming and work as shepherds.

Traditional household crafts also shaped Poproč: these included making wooden utensils and shingles. In the first half of the 20th century, weaving hemp linen and rag rugs was also widespread in Poproč. During the same period, wooden spoons and cooking spoons were made at home.

The traditional culture of Poproč includes traditional songs, lullabies and dances that have been preserved. After 1918, the history of Poproč was connected with miners who worked in magnesite mines.
