Kociha: Church, Glassmaking Tradition and Paths in the Rimava Valley

Kociha is located in the south of the Slovak Ore Mountains in the Rimava Valley. The municipality also includes a wooded area with game. There is also a mineral spring in the village with earthy, iron-bearing water.

Culture

A late Neoclassical Protestant church is regarded as Kociha’s only cultural monument of historical significance. It was built in 1856 and restored around 1910. The roof and façade were reconstructed or repaired in 1995; in 2009, the drainage system and interior were reconstructed and repaired. Next to the Protestant church stands a small wooden bell tower. The folk-style tower bears bells from 1899 and 1926.

History

A monument in Kociha commemorates the seven residents who were murdered during the Slovak National Uprising. The history of glassmaking is also part of the local tradition: in Kocížská dolina, there was a glassworks in 1787 that produced hollow glass and painted glass. In the 1870s and 1880s, the two folk artists Anton Dostal and Ján Roháč worked in Kociha, producing large quantities of painted glass pictures. The historic municipal symbol also refers to a local cooperage tradition.

According to oral tradition, the name Kociha is said to derive from a woman named Kociha and a castle that is believed to have stood on Žiavec Hill. This dual form of the tradition preserves both the connection to a person identified by name and to the presumed castle on the hill.

Paths and Events

The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa educational trail also includes fighting that took place in the cadastral territory of Kociha. The Cesta SNP route also passes through Kociha, connecting Rimavská Sobota and Rimavská Baňa. Horse riding was part of the accompanying program at Kociha Municipal Day in 2022.
