Lukovištia – Hotels between Krasko culture and Bankov

Lukovištia combines cultural history with the landscape. Its history emerges in specific places, traditional names and the routes through the village.

Culture

A memorial plaque marks Ivan Krasko’s birthplace in Lukovištia. The municipality maintains Ivan Krasko Park in the public square in front of the poet’s birthplace. Since 2008, Lukovištia has also been home to a second memorial room dedicated to Ivan Krasko. The bronze monument “Poplars” by Alina Ferdinandy stands above Ivan Krasko’s grave. A bust of Ivan Krasko stands on a pedestal in front of the former school.

The village festival is also one of the place’s traditional cultural references. At the 2024 village festival, local lacemakers performed a play featuring amusing episodes from the lives of Lukovištia’s residents. Lukovištia traditionally holds the village festival in July because this is Ivan Krasko’s birth month.

The Evangelical Church of Lukovištia stands in the centre of the village. It is a Baroque-Classical building from 1794 with a painted wooden coffered ceiling. Its furnishings include a wooden Baroque choir gallery from the late 18th century and a Classical organ with richly polychrome-carved wooden decoration. The fully restored Evangelical Church continues to be used for its intended purpose.

History

The creation of Lukovištia was preceded in the 13th century by the mining colonisation of Malohont. Lukovištia became a centre of tanning; the Malohont tanners’ guild existed there continuously from 1640 until the 1870s. Another historical trace lies in the settlement by colonists from the former Republic of Genoa, present-day Liguria. In Lukovištia, this is reflected in traditional old Italian family names as well as in the names of fields, forests and hills.

Landscape

Lukovištia lies at the foot of 438-metre-high Bankov in the Revúcka vrchovina. The main road leads from the valley of Rimavská Baňa to Lukovištia and continues around Bankov to Drienčany and Teplý Vrch.

The Teplý Vrch–Maginhrad cycling route also passes through Lukovištia. It follows paved roads and field paths in the pleasant shade of the surrounding forest.
