Discover Hnúšťa: Mining History, Culture and Hotels

Hnúšťa lies in a basin at the foot of the Stolické vrchy Mountains. The elevations Sinec, Ostrá, Štepov vrch, Brandzová and Brezina border this basin. In the city center, the Klenovská and Tisovská Rimava rivers join to form the Rimava.

Landscape

The location of Hnúšťa is shaped by the basin and the surrounding elevations, as well as by the rivers in the city center. Thus, the city brings together geographical features of the mountains and river courses in direct proximity.

Culture

The Hnúšťa Mining Museum presents the mining history of the city and the region. A visit includes brief access to underground areas of the mine, where visitors cover 600 meters. The museum also includes access to an unused section of a mine that is still in operation.

A prominent work in the cityscape is the “Detvanec” sgraffito by Vojtech Stašík from 1957, the largest sgraffito in Slovakia. The Petrivaldský Villa in Hnúšťa is a two-storey Neoclassical building dating from around 1830. Since 1998, it has been listed as a national cultural monument under number 11262.

The Petrivaldský Villa houses an interactive exhibition about Janko Francisci-Rimavský and Matej Hrebenda, as well as an exhibition on the development of the book. The Neoclassical Lutheran church in Hnúšťa dates from 1808 and stands on the site of an older church with a cemetery dating from the early 14th century. The Neoclassical Roman Catholic church dates from 1802; its first chapel was built in 1788.

The Mašiansky Bridge is located in the Maša district and is one of two surviving single-arch stone bridges dating from around 1765. The bridge is covered by a newer structure.

Activities

The outdoor swimming pool in Hnúšťa includes a 25-meter-long pool with a depth of 1 to 1.8 meters. There is also a 10 × 10-meter children's pool with a small slide.

The Hnúšťa Tourist Information Center rents out two electric bicycles, three cross bikes and a children's bicycle trailer. Helmets and reflective equipment are also available for the rented bicycles.

The section of the Márie Széchy educational trail in the cadastral area of Hnúšťa follows the historic road between Fiľakovo and Muráň castles dating from 1644. The city established this section of the educational trail in 2021.

Visitor Information

The exhibition in the Petrivaldský Villa is open on weekdays. At weekends, visits are possible only by prior arrangement and depending on the availability of a guide.
