Vieska nad Blhom lies in the middle of the Rimava Basin, on the floodplain of the Blh River. The municipality combines a deforested plain with a hilly landscape whose pronounced terraces shape the area. The underlying geology consists of marl, claystone and sandstone, partly covered by river deposits and loess soil.

History

Vieska nad Blhom has been documented in writing since 1427 under the name Wyfalu. The long history of the village is also reflected in its surviving ecclesiastical and commemorative cultural heritage.

Culture

Social and cultural events are organized in Vieska nad Blhom at the cultural centre and outdoors. A cemetery contains the tomb of the Dóri Balyo family and Bodon Gyula. Bodon Gyula (1906–1921) is commemorated there; he died at the age of 15. The Jewish burial site “Balogújfalusi zsidó sír” is also located in Vieska nad Blhom.

The Reformed church is the oldest monument in Vieska nad Blhom. The years 1872 and 1882 are given for its construction. The Reformed church in Vieska nad Blhom was built in 1882 in the traditional classicist style of the so-called Tolerance Churches of the Gemer region. It contains a memorial plaque for those who fell in the First World War, dating from the 1930s. A second memorial plaque for those who fell in the Second World War was installed in 2004 by the local Reformed association together with the municipal office of Vieska nad Blhom.

In September 2017, a Turul statue was unveiled in front of the Reformed church in Balogújfalu. The church tower contains the bell cast in 1933. It was cast by bell founder Egry Ferenc and commissioned by Dóri Balyó József and his wife, Balyó Rozália. The bell commemorates Bodon Dénesné Balyó Ilonka, who died on 2 June 1907, and Bodon Gyula, who died on 2 September 1921.

Another bell in the tower of the Reformed church in Balogújfalu dates from 1894. Its inscription reads, in essence: “I call the living to prayer, announce the danger of fire and mourn the dead – UJFALU 1894.”
