Hotel in Gotovany: Bodies of Water, Culture and History
Gôtovany lies south of the Liptovská Mara Reservoir and west of the town of Liptovský Mikuláš. The cadastral area extends from 575 to 714 metres above sea level. This geographical setting therefore includes both its location between the reservoir and the town and the varying elevations within the municipality.
Nature and Bodies of Water
The water area includes the VN Gôtovany – Sokolčianska zátoka fishing grounds. They are part of the Liptovská Mara Reservoir, where carp and predatory fish are mainly found. Gôtovanská zátoka lies near Gôtovany and is designated as a separate carp-fishing area. Its grassy banks are lined with poplars, willows and alders. Thus, specific bodies of water and shoreline names in the municipality stand alongside the reservoir’s broader landscape.
Culture and Local History
Today’s municipality of Gôtovany and the local district of Fiačice originated as two independent municipalities; Fiačice was incorporated into Gôtovany in 1924. A chapel is located in the municipal office in the Fiačice district. In Gôtovany, the Evangelical house of prayer is also considered one of the municipality’s most significant cultural and historical features, although it is not classified as a national cultural monument.
The region’s history is also linked to the structural changes surrounding the reservoirs. In 1960, the furnishings of the former Evangelical church in Mlynica were moved to a safe place in the municipality of Gôtovany when Mlynica fell victim to the construction of a dam in the Liptov region.
History
The open-air archaeological site of Havránok, with reconstructed Celtic buildings, is located near Gôtovany. During the summer season, demonstrations of sword fighting, Celtic rituals and various craft activities take place there. Also in the surrounding area, an exhibition in the tower of the former Church of the Virgin Mary recalls the historical context of the reservoir.
Community and Events
Gôtovany’s Municipal Day took place in 2025 as the ninth edition and included a raffle with more than 80 prizes. At the same event, three teams took part in a competition to cook halušky. Gôtovany’s Municipal Day was announced for 22 August 2026; in 2025, it was held as the ninth edition.
At a St. Nicholas event in Gôtovany, children from the local kindergarten put on a cultural programme for parents, senior citizens and other attendees. The St. Nicholas event also included a Christmas market with hot punch and homemade cakes. Another community tradition is the event described as traditional for the Month of Respect for Older People, which included a performance by children from the local kindergarten for senior citizens.
Gôtovany’s municipal ball was held again as a convivial evening and featured a photo booth. The modernisation of the hall in Gôtovany’s cultural centre is intended to increase comfort when holding cultural, social and community events.
