Zbehy: Culture and Nature on the Nitra – Find Hotels

Zbehy lies in the floodplain and on the terrace of the Nitra at its confluence with the Radošinka. The rivers Radošinka and Nitra run along the eastern edge of the village. The location also includes a railway line and a junction of third-class roads with a direct connection to the I/64 traffic corridor.

Culture

A Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture is documented in the cadastral area of Zbehy. A burial ground from the Early Bronze Age is also documented there. At the Pod Lesneky archaeological site, the foundations of a Romanesque church were uncovered in 1967 and 1968. Remains of a medieval settlement from the 12th century were also discovered at Pod Lesneky in 1967 and 1968. The settlement at the Pod Lesneky site, presumably called Ethei, existed from the 12th to the 15th century. The archaeological remains at Pod Lesneky are currently not presented to visitors.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was originally Gothic and was mentioned as a parish church in 1397. It is listed as a protected cultural monument under registration number ÚZKP 1576/0. The Chapel of St. Urban stands directly on the site and foundations of an earlier chapel. The preserved image from the original Chapel of St. Urban is still located in the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. St. Urban is designated as a place of prayer, veneration and thanksgiving to God.

Jozef Ignác Bajza was a parish priest in Zbehy from 1815 to 1828 and is considered the author of the first Slovak novel. A monument to him stands in a park near the parish house in Zbehy. His name is therefore associated in the village both with its parish history and with a visible memorial site.

Activities

The regional cycling route 2104 Nitra–Rišňovce passes through Zbehy. It is intended for sporty and experience-oriented cycling. Cultural life also draws on the name Bajza: Bajzove Zbehy takes place annually in Zbehy as a recitation competition featuring performances of Slovak poetry and prose. In addition, the Zbehy shooting club holds shooting competitions at the local shooting range, with participants from the Nitra region.
