Bzince pod Javorinou combines a literary memorial rooted in the village centre with historical traces and several protected natural areas. The various remnants range from a memorial room and a historic bell tower to forests, peat bogs and wet meadows.

Culture and History

In the centre of Bzince pod Javorinou, the Ľudmila Podjavorinská Memorial Room is located in the writer’s birthplace. The exhibition is largely dedicated to Ľudmila Podjavorinská and includes photographs, tapestries, books and an exhibition of puppet figures. Visits are possible year-round by prior arrangement by telephone or email.

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is already mentioned in the papal tithe registers from 1332 to 1337. Hrušové also preserves historical evidence: its bell tower is a national cultural monument with a unique clock featuring a 24-hour dial; this clock was installed in the 1990s.

Archaeological investigations at the old cemetery in Hrušové uncovered the walls of a single-nave Gothic church. The building is provisionally dated to the 14th century and is considered evidence of medieval settlement in the Podjavorina region. Historical activities included agriculture, viticulture, livestock farming, the production of wooden tableware and embroidery; traditional occupations remained in practice during the First Czechoslovak Republic.

The settlement of Cetuna is also associated with an event that took place on 27 February 1945. A battle took place there between partisans and Germans together with a readiness unit of the Hlinka Guard. The commander Miloš Uhor, his deputy Anton Jakubík and 16 partisans were killed.

Nature

The northern part of the cadastral area of Bzince pod Javorinou lies within the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The Veľká Javorina Nature Reserve extends across Lubina and Bzince pod Javorinou, covers 82.98 hectares and protects natural maple-beech forests at the highest elevations of this part of the White Carpathians.

The protected Cetuna Nature Monument is located near the settlement of Cetuna above Bzince pod Javorinou. This 0.28-hectare small peat bog protects the largest population of Gymnadenia densiflora in the region. The SKUEV0367 Holubyho kopanice Site of Community Importance is also located in the northern part of the cadastral area of Bzince pod Javorinou. It comprises regularly mown meadows and wetlands with stable orchid populations.
