Malé Kršteňany: Culture, Nature and Trails
Malé Kršteňany combines culture, nature and community life in various clearly identifiable forms. Anyone wishing to classify a place based on specific features rather than general promises will find several distinct topics here that can be objectively differentiated from one another.
Culture
The Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie church is originally a Gothic church dating from the 14th century. The original church’s enclosing masonry and a Late Gothic stone pastophorium with three small turrets have been preserved. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
The Kaplnka Panny Márie chapel has Baroque origins, as evidenced by its depiction on a military map from 1782–1784. It is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Archaeological evidence dating from the Neolithic period to La Tène–Dacian settlement has also been documented in the area of today’s municipality of Malé Kršteňany.
The municipal seal also refers to religion: it depicts a crowned Virgin Mary holding a scepter and the infant Jesus in her arms. In addition to farming, the historical population of Malé Kršteňany also practised basket weaving.
Nature
The area of Malé Kršteňany is home to a mixture of heat- and drought-loving species of Pannonian flora and Carpathian species from the foothills and mountains.
In the Partizánske District, Veľký vrch is among the protected areas. Its area is 46.6132 hectares; it is subject to the fifth level of protection. The Veľký vrch Nature Reserve covers 47.6 hectares and protects heat-loving plant and animal communities. Some species reach the northern limit of their range there. It was designated in 1967.
