The Chapel of Saint Catherine is connected with a religious tradition that encompasses both a historical period and one that continues to the present day. Until the construction of the new church, Sunday services were regularly held there. Even today, believers gather for services in the chapel on the feast of Saint Catherine. The chapel thus represents a sequence over time: Its former function for regular Sunday services ended with the construction of the new church, while the service on the feast of Saint Catherine continues as its present-day use. In addition, Veľké Kršteňany is home to the filial church “Kostol sv. Cyrila a Metóda”, which dates from 2002.
The older history of the village has also been preserved in various forms. An archaeologically documented Neolithic settlement has been identified in the territory of Veľké Kršteňany. The historical local architecture was characterized by an irregular settlement pattern following the stream and by farmhouses made of unfired bricks. The building forms mentioned describe both the spatial layout of the village and a specific building material: The farmhouses were made of unfired bricks, and the settlement followed the stream in an irregular pattern.
Another cultural tradition is represented by the regional event “Hlbinove Kršteňany”. Its tradition was established in October 2008. It is designed as a regional festival of Slovak poetry and includes a competition in the artistic recitation of poems.
Traditional dishes frequently found in the local cuisine included halušky, plum dumplings, perky filled with plum jam and šúľance with poppy seeds.
