Nováky combines a waterside landscape with sacred monuments and visible traces of its mining history. The town lies in the Upper Nitra Basin; the Nitra River flows through the western part of Nováky. The transport connections are also clearly defined: roads I/9 and I64 run through Nováky, while railway line 140 from Nové Zámky to Prievidza runs along the edge of the town.

Water and Landscape

The Nováky Reservoir, locally also called Novácke jazero, covers 18 hectares. It was built in the 1950s to cool the technical facilities of the Nováky Thermal Power Plant and regulate the flow of the Nitra. Visitors use the shores of the Nováky Reservoir for walking, running, canoeing, cycling and fishing. The Nováky Canoe Racing Club is also based at the reservoir.

The Novácko-Košské wetlands lie in the vicinity of Nováky, between Nováky and Prievidza, near the Nitra and Handlovka rivers. They formed as a result of mining-related subsidence; since around 1985, bodies of water and wetlands have developed there. Amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects, birds and various plant species have been recorded in these wetlands.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Nicholas is one of the most significant sacred monuments in Nováky. The present church was built between 1700 and 1703 in the Classical style on the site of an older church. The Chapel of Saint Juliana served as a funerary chapel. Its central circular floor plan is vaulted with a dome.

The Elekovská-Majtényiho kúria was built at the beginning of the 16th century in the Renaissance style as a residence for the lesser nobility. Since 1963, it has been a national cultural monument and has been listed in the central heritage register of the Slovak Republic. The Monument to the Miners of Nováky recalls the town’s industrial past. It commemorates generations of miners whose work significantly contributed to the town’s development. Uhoľná stopa is an educational mining trail about the region’s mining history.

The SNP Monument is located on Námestie SNP in front of the Nováky Town Hall. Nováky has also been home to a convent of the Notre Dame order since 1941.

Regional Trails and Canoeing

The Vtáčnik Mountains between Prievidza, Handlová, Nováky and Partizánske offer opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. Canoeing is also a central activity on the water: Novácka päťstovka is a traditional canoeing event; its 54th edition took place in 2026.
