Kvašov: Archaeology, Nature and Trails

Kvašov is located in the northern part of the White Carpathians.

Culture

People were already living in the area of Kvašov during the Neolithic period, that is, 3,000 to 4,000 years BC, at the Starice and Hôrka archaeological sites. The Hradisko hillfort on Ostrá Hora was also inhabited in the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Archaeological finds include stone and bronze objects, a bone awl, and a small clay figurine. A Slavic settlement existed below Ostrá Hora near Majer in the 8th and 9th centuries.

In the centre of Kvašov stands the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built in 1973. In front of the chapel there is a cross with Jesus Christ. Regular events in the village include local parish festivals held for the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

Landscape and Waterways

In a lower-lying part of Kvašov, Ostrá Hora rises to 492 m above sea level. The Kvašov stream flows through Kvašov and is also known as Suchlica. The stream is 8.4 km long, is a right-bank tributary of the Lednica, and is a fourth-order watercourse. Its source is in the White Carpathians, in the Vršatecké bradlá subregion.

Nature

A total of 189 species of higher plants have been recorded in Kvašov. Four of them, Convallaria majalis, Melittis melissophyllum, Ranunculus auricomus agg. and Scrophularia umbrosa, are classified as rare or endangered.

The flower-rich meadows around Kvašov feature a diverse mix of meadow, fringe and woodland plants, as well as drought-, warmth- and moisture-loving species. They are also notable for their great diversity of invertebrates and rank among the important European sites for several endangered butterfly species. A shelter with a fire pit and benches stands at the summit of Ostrá Hora.

Getting Around

A recommended and frequently used cycle route passes through Kvašov. It connects to the signposted Váh Cycle Route 002, which runs through Horovce. Cyclists also use the Horovce–Kvašov–Lednica–Dolná Breznica–Lednické Rovne circuit.

A green-marked hiking trail leads from Lednické Rovne over the highlands around Ostrá Hora to Lednica. In addition to cycle routes, this provides marked trail connections across the ridges and through the neighbouring villages.

Village Life

Visitors to Kvašov can refresh themselves at an inn built entirely from adobe bricks. The building was formerly a school from the period of the First Republic; its walls are up to 1 metre thick.
