Mojtín: Natural Monument, Mountain Trails and Hotels

Mojtín is located in the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The village combines protected nature, marked trails, winter sports and several reminders of local history within a compact thematic area.

Nature

The natural features of Mojtín include Mojtínska priepastná jaskyňa. It is protected as a natural monument and lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Mojtín. The cave is 503 m long and 108 m deep. Thus, both its protected status and its known dimensions are central to this natural monument.

Cycling

A specific connection between the surrounding trails and the village is provided by Route 5313 Čelkova Lehota – Riedka – Mojtín. This 14.9 km-long, easy recreational MTB route has an elevation difference of 360/270 m and runs over asphalt, paved paths and forest roads. Most of the route passes through the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. It ends in Mojtín near the local church.

Culture and History

The local church is the parish church of Saints Cyril and Methodius. It was built in 1863. An older religious history is associated with Mojtínska jaskyňa: until the consecration of the church school in 1860, it served as a natural church for five years.

In 2005, the path to Mojtínska jaskyňa was made accessible and renovated; a statue of Saint Joseph was also installed in the cave. Access follows a blue-marked trail towards Riedka, then a signposted turnoff and finally a short forest path.

Mojtín is also home to a memorial plaque commemorating Ladislav Škultéty–Gábriš. Above it is a bronze equestrian statue.

Winter and Trails

For winter sports, SKI Mojtín has downhill runs for skiers of varying experience on the northern slopes of Javorina, Veľký Grúň and Malý Grúň. The facilities also include a groomed cross-country ski trail starting and ending at Bufet Vŕšky.

Bufet Vŕšky in the Ski Mojtín resort offers refreshments, views of the surrounding natural landscape and a place to rest after skiing or hiking. From there, a moderately easy 1.6 km ascent leads uphill and takes approximately 45 minutes. Two swings are attached to the structure.

Marked hiking trails are also part of the village landscape. From Gombár, a district of Mojtín, a green-marked trail passes below the summit of Rakytník; a local path leads to a viewpoint. Another green-marked hiking route leads to Ostrá Malenica, a mountain rising 909 m above sea level. According to the map, the round trip takes more than three hours.
