Zubák: Hotel in the White Carpathians, Route 23 and traditions

Nature and landscape

Zubák lies in the northern part of the White Carpathians, in the upper section of the valley of the same name and in the valley of the Zubák stream. The municipality extends across elevations between 400 and 854 metres, while the village centre is situated at 420 metres. One of the village’s natural features is a sulphurous mineral spring. There are viewpoints from Žrnova.

Culture and customs

The built heritage includes 19th-century wooden houses located in the municipality of Zubák. They have three rooms and often an upper floor as well as a veranda; at the rear, they have a thatched gable roof. The local religious architecture includes the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Vendelin and the chapels of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and Saint Vendelin. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Vendelin dates from the early 19th century and stands on the site of an older wooden church. The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was built in 1944 by Rudolf, Eduard and Martin Slabý. The three men continue to take care of its upkeep to this day. The Chapel of Saint Vendelin was built out of gratitude after the end of a livestock epidemic in the 1920s and today belongs to the Roman Catholic Church in the parish of Zubák.

The annual cycle includes several traditional customs. Every year, Zubák holds a carnival procession through the municipality and the symbolic burial of the bass, followed by entertainment. The Lucia tradition is also maintained: on Saint Lucy’s Day, veiled girls go from house to house and symbolically drive away evil forces with goose wings. In the Saint Nicholas tradition, boys dress up as Saint Nicholas and the Devil, distribute sweets to children and read out humorous messages from the past municipal year.

Traces of the forest railway

A forest railway from Lednické Rovne ran into the cadastral territory of the municipality of Zubák in the White Carpathians. At kilometre 15.6, a railway triangle known as “Lazy” was built in the municipality’s cadastral territory as part of the forest railway for turning locomotives.

Hiking

Route 23 Mestečko–Zubák–Lednica–Lednické Rovne runs through the entire village of Zubák and has the same trail markings throughout. The route is classified as moderately difficult. Travelling by public transport is recommended for this route because its start and end points are not identical.
