Urgench’s natural landmark is the Amu Darya River. Like the Syr Darya, it is one of Uzbekistan’s two largest waterways. Urgench’s main attraction is not in the city itself: it is nearby Khiva, a historic museum city that has been almost entirely preserved. Today, it looks much as it did during the days of the Great Silk Road. The drive from Urgench to Khiva takes about 30 minutes. In the tourism industry, Urgench is regarded as the gateway to Old Khiva. That is why considerable attention is being paid to modernising the city’s transport infrastructure. The Urgench airport was upgraded to international status not long ago. Under the ICAO system, it was awarded Category I status.

The hotel and hospitality sector for foreign tourists is still in its early stages in Urgench. There are just two hotels here that meet Western standards: the four-star “Khorezm Palace” and the three-star “Bakht-Saodat.” The hotels arrange airport transfers, a great convenience for Western tourists. The first international restaurants have also opened in Urgench. You can order not only Uzbek dishes but also European cuisine.

Urgench in Uzbekistan is sometimes confused with Kunya-Urgench in Turkmenistan. Kunya-Urgench, or Old Urgench, is one of Central Asia’s most fascinating cities, with many monuments of Asian architecture. It was once the capital of Northern Khorezm, a great state in the Amu Darya region that for a time was considered a centre of Islam.

Planning your time in Urgench

Many travellers use Urgench mainly as an arrival point for Khiva. The airport, railway station and road links make the city a convenient transport hub in Khorezm. Even so, it is worth taking a brief look at Urgench itself: the city offers a glimpse of modern life in the region and highlights the contrast with Khiva’s historic old town. When planning your trip, consider transfer times, ticket availability and the location of your accommodation. If you are travelling onward to Nukus or toward the Aral Sea, check connections early.

Using Urgench as a travel hub

Many routes use Urgench less as a traditional sightseeing destination and more as an arrival or transfer point. The airport, railway and roads connect the city with the Khorezm region. For the onward journey to Khiva, the official Uzbek tourism information on Khiva is a useful resource. Check connections, transfer times and actual availability for your travel dates.

A short stay in Urgench can still be worthwhile if you are interested in modern life in the region, its location on the Amu Darya or preparing for the next leg of your journey. For an overview, see Uzbekistan and the regional travel information. Kunya-Urgench in Turkmenistan is a different place and should not be confused with Urgench when arranging tickets, checking border requirements or planning your route.

Continuing to Khiva and around the region

If you are using Urgench as a gateway to Khiva, plan the transfer as a separate leg of your journey. Depending on your arrival time, luggage, accommodation and traffic, it may make sense to continue straight to Khiva, or spend the night in Urgench for added security. Getting there and getting around, the airport and train travel should all be considered alongside your return journey. A tight connection leaves little room for delays or time to find your accommodation.

On a longer trip to Uzbekistan, Bukhara and Samarkand can each form their own cultural and architectural itinerary. They are not automatic day trips from Urgench. Culture and history can help you decide what to see, while travel preparation and current schedules will determine the practical order of your trip.

Documents, daily life and onward travel

Before setting off, check entry requirements and documents as well as the requirements for each planned onward journey. If travelling toward Nukus or the Aral Sea, allow extra time for the journey and consider daylight hours and the availability of connections. Information on language and communication and money and payments is especially useful when arranging tickets, directions or transfers locally.

If you extend your stay, you can explore other interests through nature and landscapes or regional cuisine. However, check opening hours, traffic conditions and available services directly before your visit. This makes Urgench a reliable starting point while leaving you in control of how much time to devote to historic Khiva and other destinations.

Connecting arrivals, transfers and Khorezm

Urgench is often used as an arrival and transfer point for the Khorezm region. The Uzbekistan overview provides the broader context, while Khiva deserves its own stay and time allowance for its historic old town. Coordinate your airport arrival, railway station, transfer and accommodation according to your exact arrival time.

For a longer route, consider historic sites in Khorezm, Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent. Kunya-Urgench in Turkmenistan is a different place and requires separate border and entry planning. Update getting there and getting around and entry requirements and documents before each onward journey.

The official Uzbek travel information supplements regional advice; include the latest travel advice for Uzbekistan in your safety checks. Before departure, confirm schedules, transfer prices, luggage arrangements, accommodation, payment methods, weather and your return journey. For everyday needs and communication, money and payments and language and communication are also useful.
