Hotels in Chanava: Nature and Culture

Chanava lies within the Cerová vrchovina and Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 protected area. This protected area, in which Chanava is situated, provides suitable breeding and habitats for the woodlark, the Eurasian scops owl, and the European bee-eater. Chanava therefore brings together natural surroundings and cultural history, as the village is also home to a memorial room dedicated to Mihály Tompa.

Rural Character

Chanava lies in the southeast of the Rimavská Basin, on the floodplain and terrace of the Slaná River. The village has preserved its agricultural character. Traditional rural economic activity also included viticulture; the vine became the symbol of the municipality. The riverside landscape, agricultural surroundings, and winegrowing therefore shape Chanava’s appearance.

Transport

No railway line runs through the municipal territory of Chanava. The nearest railway connection is in Lenartovce. In Číž, there is access to express trains on the Zvolen–Košice railway line. The three railway-related aspects should therefore be clearly distinguished: the absence of a railway connection within the municipal territory, the connection in Lenartovce, and access to express trains in Číž.

Culture and History

The Calvinist church in Chanava is a Neoclassical church built between 1823 and 1830. It has a Rieger organ dating from 1893, is in good condition, and continues to serve its religious purpose. The pastor and poet Mihály Tompa, who worked in Chanava from 1852 to 1868, is buried beside the church. His grave and gravestone are registered as a national cultural monument under number 1050. The parsonage and the memorial plaque commemorating Mihály Tompa’s work are also registered as national cultural monuments under numbers 1049/1–2.

The architectural heritage also includes the Neoclassical manor house of the Hanvay family. It comprises a stable, a chamber, and a barn dating from the second half of the 19th century. Traditional Gemer architecture associated with small noble families has also been preserved in Chanava. Alongside the church and the memorial sites associated with Mihály Tompa, these building forms are further elements of the local cultural history.

The cultural character is complemented by art in public and communal spaces. Chanava has a park with plaster sculptures by Aladár Igo depicting traditional agricultural activities in the municipality. A metal sculpture by Oto László stands in the courtyard of the deaconry centre.
