Dolná Breznica: Landscape, History and Festivals

Dolná Breznica lies on the northeastern edge of the White Carpathians. The village is situated in a narrow, relatively small basin on the southeastern edge of the isolated Kobyliniec massif. Most of the cadastral area extends across steep slopes and heavily dissected hills. This brings together, within a confined area, a clearly defined landscape boundary, an isolated massif and a varied terrain profile.

History

The settlements appear in 1388 under the name posessio BREZNYCZE. Historically, sheep farming and sheep grazing developed in Dolná Breznica. The old mill already existed in 1720 and operated until 1952. These three points in time connect the written history of the village with earlier forms of pastoral farming and the mill's long history of use.

Culture

Dolná Breznica has an old, simple wooden belfry with a Y-shaped bell. The Church of Saint Paul was consecrated on 11 July 2004. Its entrance is adorned by a 18 m-high covered tower. Inside are attributes of the saint, including a book and a sword. The belfry, church, tower and furnishings thus form different visible elements of the village.

Cycling Route and Festivals

Cycling route 5307 passes through Dolná Breznica and then continues into the forest. The Hodové slávnosti take place annually over a weekend around the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. For these celebrations, local hunters prepare goulash. The Saturday programme includes performances, as well as dancing and singing at the cultural centre. The Maypole-raising ceremony includes a procession and music.
