Lysá pod Makytou: Culture, Nature and Cycling Routes in the Border Region

Lysá pod Makytou lies in the Lýssky Pass at the foot of the Javorníky and White Carpathians. The Slovak border municipality borders the Czech Republic and, outside the town center, features a distinctive landscape with 32 Kopanice settlements. The municipal area encompasses hilly, upland-like and mountainous terrain at elevations of approximately 350 to 922 m.

Culture

The annual Folklórna Lysá festival, held in the amphitheater of Lysá pod Makytou, is part of the cultural calendar. This folklore event presents traditional songs, music and dances. Folklórna Lysá also includes a craftsmen’s street and creative workshops for children. The event thus combines a stage program, traditional crafts and a dedicated offering for younger visitors.

An important building in the municipality is the Church of Saint Stephen. The Neoclassical single-nave church has an integrated tower and a main altar dating from 1824. Its interior also contains an artistically valuable statue of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, created by the Kafkovi brothers from Moravia. In the Strelenka district stands a wooden bell tower dating from 1933. Lysá pod Makytou is also home to a former state school building from 1912. A chapel stands in the Beňadín district, surrounded by nature.

Nature

Hiking trail 8584 leads from Lysá pod Makytou to Makyta. It alternates between forests and meadows, passes through the Okrajkovci settlement and by a cross before continuing to the Hrnčár saddle. From there, there are views of the surrounding area. During summer and autumn walks through the landscape around Lysá pod Makytou, wild strawberries, raspberries and blackberries can be found. With a little luck, bilberries can also be found in the Beňadín district.

For sports away from the trails, a publicly accessible multifunctional sports field is available on the grounds of the Lysá pod Makytou school. It is open to children, teenagers and adults and is suitable for small-sided football, nohejbal, volleyball, tennis, handball and floorball, among other activities.

Cycling

Route 5314 is a green road cycling route classified as REKREA. It is 15.6 km long and has an asphalt surface; the stated elevation gain is 607 m and the descent is 66 m. Route 5314 begins in Lysá pod Makytou at a junction with a red cycling highway and ends at the Javorka saddle below Kohútka. There it crosses the red Javornícka cycling highway.

The Javornícka cycling highway runs from Lúky pod Makytou to Lysá pod Makytou, where it crosses the road and then climbs through the municipality’s streets. Designated as red route 053, it is intended for experienced mountain bikers, extends over 19.8 km and has asphalt, gravel and natural-surface sections.

Winter and Local Life

The Skipark Dešná ski resort is located within the cadastral area of Lysá pod Makytou and has two downhill runs.
