Záriečie lies at the transition between the Javorníky and the White Carpathians, northwest of the town of Púchov. Mestecká skala rises above the villages of Mestečko and Záriečie. The 437-metre-high Mestečianska skala, incorrectly also called Mestecká skala, can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail. This trail begins at Záriečie railway station and leads via Hrebienok at 759 metres to the Kýčera saddle at 745 metres in the Lazianska vrchovina.

The landscape is closely connected with traces of local culture and history. Polished stone axes from the Bronze Age and a burial site were discovered in a rock crevice at the small castle of Mestecká skala above Mestečko and Záriečie. A monument to M. R. Štefánik, erected in 1935, also stands near the Evangelical church in Záriečie. The birthplace of the ethnographer and museum employee J. Geryk is also located in Záriečie and is marked with a commemorative plaque.

Culture

The Evangelical church is a Neoclassical hall church with a roof turret. A Protestant gallery runs around the interior on three sides. The church was built in 1786 as a Toleration church without a tower, on the site of a wooden church. During alterations in 1859, also partially dated to 1856, it was given a tower. The gallery houses a single-manual organ with nine stops; its origin is estimated to date to the beginning of the 20th century.

Local culture also includes the Záriečanka folklore group, which was founded in Záriečie in 1995. It is characterized by self-embroidered traditional costumes, three-part singing, traditional dances and folk music. Záriečanka performs in Záriečie, in the Púchov Valley, throughout Slovakia and abroad, contributing to the preservation and presentation of the folkloric traditions of the Púchov Valley.

History

In the 18th century, the activities of Záriečie’s residents included knife-making, working in a fulling mill, sewing slippers that formed part of traditional costumes, weaving, carpentry and tanning.

Sport

Cycle trial is the predominant sport in Záriečie. The local cycle trial club has produced three world champions and other successful athletes.
