Cheb District: Hotels and Accommodation

Nature

Soos is protected as a national nature reserve. The area preserves inland salt meadows, transition bogs, and quaking bogs; cranes regularly nest here. Soos is also part of the Natura 2000 network. It is located in the Cheb Basin, six kilometers northeast of Františkovy Lázně.

History

Vildštejn stands on a granite spur above a stream valley. The originally Romanesque castle is located in Skalná and is separated from Skalná by a moat.

Spa wafers are a traditional regional delicacy.

Krajinka is a tourism, recreation, and sports complex on both banks of the Ohře below Cheb Castle. The complex therefore appeals to those interested in spending time together with children and adults. A pedestrian boulevard is lined with children’s playgrounds, and there is also a miniature golf area. A lookout tower stands near the Vávrova footbridge; there is also a picnic meadow with several barbecue areas.

The city’s history is also characterized by notable buildings: Špalíček is a group of eleven houses originally built as merchant houses on Cheb’s square. Pachelbelův dům now houses a museum and is connected with the murder of Albrecht z Valdštejna. Cheb Castle is an example of an imperial palace; its history dates back to the 12th century.

Nature and Trails

A deep peat bog lies in the northern basin of Soos. A shallow lake formerly occupied the southern basin; there is also a diatomite deposit several meters thick.

Visitors to Soos can taste water from two captured springs. The educational trail is accessible and takes about one hour. It begins and ends at Nový Drahov–Kateřina railway station and is connected to Františkovy Lázně by a red-marked hiking trail.
